Faceted Creatures

A project that is inspired by the work of American illustrator Dan Morris' "Peace" designs. It can be easily adapted down to lower grades.

THE PLAN
5 sessions; 50 minutes per session

1. SWBAT use color and line in the creation of original artworks
2. SWBAT use creative thinking to develop patterns and designs
3. SWBAT explain the difference between abstract and representational

1. Students will complete the pattern practice exercise
- Review concepts such as Abstract and Representational
- Review Warm and Cool colors
- Define what a scene is
2. Students will complete the Sea Turtle Worksheet using a choice of colored pencils and/or markers
3. Students will choose an existing animal and draw or trace (using the projector) the outline of their animal
4. Using the naturally present 'compartments' of their animals, students will generate designs, patterns, and scenes using a choice of media

Students will be assessed using the attached rubric
