Phoencian Tablets

Students learning about the Phoenicians in Social Studies created these clay tablets using the slab process and then carving their names using the Phoenician alphabet into the wet clay.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 40 minutes per session

1. SWBAT demonstrate how to roll out a clay slab using a slab roller.
2. SWBAT write their name using the Phoenician alphabet.

1. Red clay
2. Rolling pins & burlap or clay roller
3. Wood clay tools
4. Phoenician alphabet
5. Powdered black tempera
6. Water dishes
7. Paint brushes
8. Paper towels/tissues

Day 1:
1. Demo how to roll out a clay slab. Roll some of the edges to give it an old look.

2. Students have work time to make their slabs.

3. Pass out the Phoenician alphabet so students can write their names on the tablet.

Day 2: After firing, students paint their tablets with watered down black, powdered tempera paint. Wipe up and dab the excess paint to get an old, weathered look.
