Students will study traditional Mexican folk art and its role in Mexican society. Students will then create their own piece of art, which reflects their own culture.

THE PLAN
5 sessions; 50 minutes per session
1. SWBAT create a piece of tin art, which represents their culture.
2.SWBAT depict a variety of textures, including actual and perceived.
Tooling Foil
Permanent Markers
Pencils
White copy paper
Tape
Felt or magazines to put under the piece
1. Discuss Mexican folk art and traditional symbols used in tin art.
2. Review texture, actual and perceived.
3. Teacher creates a bubble map describing herself, her culture, and her interests.
4. Ask students to create a bubble map describing themselves, their interests, their family, culture, etc.
5. Using these ideas, have students create 3-5 thumbnails in their sketchbook of various compositions they may wish to tool in the foil.
6. Once students have selected a thumbnail, they will transfer their design to the larger 6x6 inch white paper.
7. Students will then tape their drawing paper to the tooling foil. Remember to tell students words must be written in reverse.
8. With the foil on top of a piece of felt or magazine students will use a dull pencil to outline their drawing and transfer their designs.
9. Discuss various techniques to add texture, like using their pencil eraser to create a hammered look.
10. Once the design is transferred they will take off the white paper. Students will use permanent markers to add color.
