9 sessions; 60 minutes per session

The student will have the ability to
-Use Contour line to create the basic shapes of a "crushed pop can".

-Recognize and use value and color to create the "illusion" of form.

Mat Board or Construction Paper

STEP ONE: REVIEW
1. Begin by reviewing contour drawings for a couple of days. Make sure that the students understand;
-What a contour is
-Understand the different types of Contours
2. The Students should draw objects using contour techniques for a couple of days. Make sure that each drawing has a specific goal or benchmark.
3. Practice, Practice, Practice!

STEP TWO: INTRO TO VALUE
Address the following questions with your students.
-What is value?
-Why do we need value?
-What does it help an artist achieve?

STEP 3: DEMONSTRATE & PRACTICE
-Achromatic Value Scale. (Make sure that students understand how to manipulate values using pressure and layering).
-With Guided practice allow the students to create their own Achromatic Value Scale.

STEP 4: DEMONSTRATE & PRACTICE
Monochromatic Color Scale using Blick Color Pencils. Address Layering and pressure techniques that are necessary to create a progressive value change.
-With Guided practice allow the students to create their own Monochromatic Value Scale.

ASSESS AND RETEACH IF NECESSARY
(Stay diligent, make sure that the students are proficient)

STEP 5: BEGIN FINAL PROJECT
1. Demonstrate how to crush the cans into a difficult, but pleasing form. Don't over do it constant bending is undesirable.
2. Demonstrate how you use your contour drawing skills to draw the slightly crushed can.
3. With Guided practice allow the students to draw their own Crushed contour can on mattboard using an "H" pencil.
4. Demonstrate how to identify and record the highlights and shadows. Allow time for students to add this to their drawings.
5. Demonstrate how to add color using multiple values. I often find that using a practice worksheet really helps you identify those who might not completely understand the concept.
6. Allow the students to work using guided practice. By constantly assessing the progress of your student you can anticipate issues easier.

A strong foundation or understanding of Contour drawing is needed in order for this assignment to be successful.

This lesson can be easily adapted to teach other value or color concepts.
