Students will challenge themselves to create reverse value drawings. Instead of using a pencil to shade the darker areas on white paper, they will use white charcoal pencils to shade the lighter values on black paper.

THE PLAN
5 sessions; 40 minutes per session
1. SWBAT demonstrate value techniques in a drawing.
2. SWBAT think in reverse to do a reverse value drawing.
3. SWBAT demonstrate knowledge about charcoal pencils.
1. White charcoal pencils
2. Black mat board scraps
3. Black and white images to draw from
1. Have the students choose a black and white image to draw from out of a magazine (or their own if they have one).
2. Pass out scraps of black mat board for students to draw on. Have them measure out a 3/4" border around the edge of the mat board before drawing.
3. Tell students that instead of observing the shadows and shading those, they must observe the high lights in the picture and shade those with the white charcoal pencil.
I am actually assigning this as a sketchbook assignment over the February break. We are currently finishing up a painting unit where we have incorporated value into the paintings. I am assigning this as a challenge as well as to get students to practice drawing with value again.
