A sculpture lesson that looks at the work of Sayaka Ganz and discusses how humans impact the natural environment.

THE PLAN
8 sessions; 45 minutes per session

1. SWBAT view and discuss artworks created by contemporary artists using appropriate art vocabulary
2. SWBAT combine multiple found objects to create a unified form
3. SWBAT make connections between arts and other disciplines

1. CLEAN 'safe' materials that would normally be discarded (yogurt containers, cardboard, plastic bottles, food containers, bottle caps, bubble wrap, etc) - discourage metal and glass objects
2. Hot Glue Guns
3. Hot Glue Sticks
4. Utility Knives
5. Self-healing mats

1. Show students images of Sayaka Ganz' projects that feature ocean projects
2. Discuss the impact of human trash on the ocean
3. Create sketches that plan ocean creature forms using discarded materials
4. Begin sculpting ocean creatures

Students are assessed using the common visual arts rubric (see attached)


This lesson could be used for mature middle/junior high level classrooms. There is significant tie in with earth sciences lessons if there is a cooperating science teacher in your building.
