1. SWBAT explain "reduce, reuse, recycle".
2. SWBAT manipulate recycled/found objects and materials into an original sculpture.

You can use whatever supplies you collect. Here are some that we used:
1. Cardboard boxes broken down and cut into usable sizes
2. Scissors
3. Glue- bottled glue, hot glue
4. Bottle caps
5. Empty watercolor wells
6. Yarn scraps
7. Cardboard tubes (toilet paper or paper towels)
8. Fabric scraps
9. Tissue paper (saved from holidays or parties)
10. Old file folders

12. Egg cartons
13. Candy wrappers
14. Crayons
15. Markers
16. Masking tape

1. Discuss Tom Deininger's Self Portrait
-What is this a picture of?
-What is it made of? (The artist makes most of his work out of trash and found objects)
-Why would an artist want to make art out of trash?
2. Earth Day Intro
-Talk to students about Earth Day
-Brainstorm ways to take care of the Earth
-Explain that we can help in Art class by not being wasteful and finding ways to reuse old things instead of always buying new materials
3. Recycled Art Challenge
-Show examples of "recycled" art
-Demonstrate attaching with slits and tabs
-Show available materials
-Challenge students to make a sculpture out of materials headed for the trash or the recycling bin
4. Students start working
5. Review challenge and students complete projects in class 2.

In addition to teaching about environmental issues, this is a great budget stretcher.
Students were really excited, asking if they could make another recycled project as soon as they finished their first.
