In this lesson, 2nd and 3rd grade students create three dimensional soft sculptures of monsters out of muslin and learn how to sew.

THE PLAN
5 sessions; 50 minutes per session
1.SWBAT understand how to turn 2d into 3d.
2.SWBAT create a soft sculpture.
3. SWBAT learn how to do a simple sewing stitch, thread a needle, and stuff a sculpture.
4.SWBAT to paint their sculpture with tempera.
1. Muslin, cut to at least 16 by 9 inches.
2. Safety needles, one for each student.
3. White thread and scissors.
4. Fiberfill or other stuffing material.
5. Tempera paint
6. Paint brushes, water, and rags
7. Sketchbooks
Students draw a simple monster shape in their sketchbook. They fold the muslin half and draw their shape on the muslin in pencil. The students cut out their shape with scissors. The teacher demonstrates needle safety and the students thread their needles with white thread. The teacher demonstrates simple sewing techniques, including a drawing on the board. The students sew their muslin but leave a small opening for turning inside out. Then the students turn their sculpture inside out and stuff with fiberfill. They finish sewing the opening closed. Then the students use tempera paint to paint the sculpture and create details such as eyes, mouth, etc.
