Primary Mandalas

Students will learn about primary colors by creating mandalas with the help of geometric shapes. This project can work for kindergartners as well.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 60 minutes per session

1. SWBAT learn about primary colors.

2. SWBAT create mandalas.

1. White drawing paper

2. Crayons (red, blue and yellow)

3. Compass or large and small circular item (tin lid or cup)

4. Construction paper

5. Scissors

6. Glue

7. Black marker

8. Pencil with eraser

9. Ruler

1. Using a compass create a large circle in the center of the paper.

2. Next create a smaller circle in the center of the large one.

3. Last but not least create an even smaller circle in the center of the one made in step two. There should now be three circle.

4. Go over the pencil lines with a black marker, then eraser any visible pencil marks.

5. The easiest way to start creating the patterns for the mandala is to section off parts of the circles with a ruler. Then begin filling each section with different shapes. This should fist be done in pencil, then once you have all of your patterns laid out go over them with the black marker. Erase any pencil marks.

6. Now here comes the fun part. Using primary colors (red, blue and yellow) color the mandala with crayons.

7. Cut out the mandala with scissors, then glue to a piece of construction paper. Dark or muted colored construction paper works the best because it makes the colors of the mandala stand out.

Encourage students to included geometric shapes to their mandalas.
