High [9th-12th] Year-long Plan

Can you keep a Secret? The Post Secret Project

Created on August 17, 2012 by Jenncook678

Post Secret is a site that uses secrets as an art form. http://www.postsecret.com/ I have used their site as inspiration for a year long art project to try to make my classroom a community.

THE PLAN
5 sessions; 60 minutes per session

1.SWBAT respond verbally and visually to the use of art elements in personal works and the works of others.
2.SWBAT acknowledge and respect individual approaches to and opinions of art.
3.SWBAT recognize and describe the role of the visual arts in challenging, sustaining, and reflecting society’s beliefs and traditions.
4.SWBAT identify opportunities to participate in the visual arts in school, community, and the world of work.
5.SWBAT develop an appreciation of diversity among individuals as reflected in their artwork.
6.SWBAT recognize that, and investigate how art as a human activity emerges from human needs, values, beliefs, ideas, and experiences.
7.SWBAT use, with confidence, experiences from their personal, social, cultural, and physical environments as a basis for visual expression.

1. Introduce postsect.com.
2. Discuss what a secrets can be.
3. Look at examples and discuss.
4. Give students starting recipe cards, ensure they know where there are more cards (for multiple submissions or to give friends.
5. Check envelope for submissions thoughout the term.
6. Create a communal wall of secrets.
7. Students may start to create their response piece at any time during the term, using any media of their choice (this makes for an awesome project for those early finishers). They simply select a card(s) that inspires an idea.
8. Students should display their work with the original card and include an artist statement.
9. Present works

Students' work will be self-assessed using a rubric created with ample input from the students (formative).
Students will be assessed on their artist statement and their presentation (formative).
- I look for evidence of concept, development, planning, creation and creativity.

There are several post secret books. It's better to check for them in stores because you might get lucky and find a postcard inside. Many people like to slip their secrets in the books!

Please note, this is a year long project. It is intended to be taught at the start and be worked on during those inbetween times or at home. The presentations will be toward the end of the year.
My goal for this project to use art to help students understand that they all have secrets. In a school where everyone doesn't always get along it is important for the kids to see that they are not alone in their problems, there might just be someone else out there who shares your experience, opinion or feeling.

This is why the assessment options are rather vague. I like to spend a lot of time developing the criteria with each class so that the project can grow with their visions.

If you have any questions or ideas for improvements, I'd love to hear them!
(Sorry if there are any spelling errors, I did this on an iPad and I'm not the best at typing on it yet...)

So far so good! I presented the project on friday and the kids seem really inspired by it. I got a few messages this weekend from a few students who had done some further research on the website. I bought one of the books, they are really excited for it to come in!

are the kids okay with sharing their secrets? I love this project, but, I wonder if it's just too personal? I don't think I'd be okay sharing my secrets, please advise!
