Value Portraits

Painting self portraits in a simplified POP style with a focus on creating different values and strong contrast with watercolors.

THE PLAN

1. Photograph Students
2. Edit Photographs to B&W then Posterize using photo editing application. Free online editor: Pixlr (45 min)
3. Print photos for student reference of value map
4. Students will draw out or trace the areas of different values. (20 min.)
5. Students will apply masking fluid to the areas that will remain white. (10 min.)
6. Students will apply a watercolor wash of the lightest value areas in the color of their choice. (5 min.)
7. Students will gradually apply different values of watercolor to their portrait to create contrast between different areas of their portrait. (20 min.)
8. Once paint is dry remove masked areas. A hair dryer can help to speed up the drying time! (5 min.)
9. Create Artist Statement

Students will create an Artist Statement discussing what was learned in the creation and process of the painting.


Easy & quick watercolor painting project that really opened students' mind to the potential of watercolors to create a variety of values.
Students loved learning about masking fluid and how to protect areas of their paintings.
