This project will introduce students to the art of linocut printmaking. Students will create a drawing of a fall scene based on observations of the fall season outside. They will then create a linocut of a leaf of choice to create a border to frame their artwork with.

THE PLAN
5 sessions; 40 minutes per session
1. SWBAT create a colored pencil drawing from observation.
2. SWBAT safely create a linocut print.
3. SWBAT identify the following printmaking tools: linoleum, brayer, carving tool, print ink.
1. 8 1/2" x 11" drawing paper
2. 4"x6" linoleum block
3. Carving tool
4. Brayer
5. Printmaking ink
6. Colored pencils
7. 20"x24" white paper (or any larger size than the drawing)
1. On day 1, discuss with students what happens outside during the fall season. Take a walk outside or observe out the classroom windows to note the changes in the trees, bushes, animals and grass.
2. On day 1 and 2, have students create a fall drawing based on what they observed that includes at least one tree.
3. On day 3, introduce students to linocut printmaking. Look at some examples and discuss the use of line and patterns. Ask students to draw a leaf, any leaf of their choice (may go outside for 15 mintues to find a leaf, or have students draw from picture/memory). Demonstrate how to transfer the leaf to the linoleum and demo how to cut safely with the tools.
4. On day 4, allow students to continue carving out their leaf.
5. On the last day, demonstrate to students how to make a print from their linocut. Discuss using a variety of colors and leaf palcement around the edge. Have students glue their drawing to the center of the large white paper. Then, let them make prints with their leaves around the outside edge to create a fall frame.
Students will be assessed based on a reflection that they will write about their art. In that reflection, they must:
1. Explain the process of printmaking.
2. Describe what elements and principles of art they used to create their final project.
This lesson can really be expanded on by going more in depth with the art elements and prinicples for the drawing element. You can go as simple as "Y" tree drawings to more in depth as to talk about creating form and value in a drawing.
