THE PLAN
Students will observe and understand the proportions of the human face. Students will explore the technique of trace printing and a mixed media approach while creating portraits of each other.

Step One: Pencils, paper, erasers.

Step Two: Plexiglass printing plates, water based printing ink, brayers, assorted paper cut two inches larger than the printing plates, pencils, newspaper.

Step Three: Crayola construction paper crayons.

Week One
Students are instructed in the basic proportions of the human face.
Students use contour line to create a simple portrait of another student in the room.
Week Two
Students apply a thin layer of printing ink to a plexiglass printing plate using a brayer.
Students "blot" the ink with a single sheet of newspaper to remove excess ink.
Students choose a sheet of paper and lay it gently onto the plate.
Students place the portrait drawing on top of the paper (so we have inked plate on bottom, sheet of plain paper on top of that and drawing on top of that.)
Using a pencil, students retrace their drawing, applying gentle pressure to the pencil (this will draw the ink from the plate onto the plain paper, replicating the drawing in a trace print.)
Remove the drawing and gently pull the paper from the plate. Now you have a trace print!
Repeat as desired with different colors of ink and paper. Drawings can be used over and over with differing effects.
Explain to students that the image will be in reverse!
Week Three
Hand color the prints using Crayola construction paper crayons. Use the Fauvist painters as a visual reference to encourage experimental color choices.

Content: Does the student's work demonstrate an understanding of portraiture, facial proportions, features, etc?
Creativity: Does the student's work demonstrate risk taking in terms of color and line?
Craftsmanship: Does the student's work demonstrate proper use of the materials and an understanding of the Trace Print process?
