Elementary [1st-5th] Lesson Plan

OP Art Hands

Created on February 21, 2013 by TheresaGillespie

This is a simple lesson that will introduce students to Op Art. They will use line to create a drawing that gives the illusion of a hand popping out of the drawing. Different color schemes can also be used. In my lesson we were also learning about complementary colors.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 45 minutes per session

1. SWBAT define what OP Art is.
2. SWBAT review line quality.
3. SWBAT use line to create the illusion of depth.
4. SWBAT identify complementary colors.

1. White drawing paper
2. Pencil
3. Markers

Need these materials? Visit Blick!

1. Using a pencil, trace hand and part of arm to edge of paper
2. Choose a pair of complementary colored markers + black
3. Use these 3 colors of markers to draw a straight line from edge of paper to the contour line of the hand. From that point, draw the line curved to make the hand look as if it is popping out and then return to a straight line on the other side.
-The colors could be drawn in a pattern or random

Students will be assessed with a meets expectations, below expectations, or exceeds expectations. Meets =students have succeeded in creating the illusion of depth, used complementary colors, and used good craftsmanship. Exceeds = all of meets + very neat or extra creativity. Below = students did not create the illusion of depth, didn't use complementary colors, or was very messy.

I used this lesson successfully with 4th and 5th graders.

I love these! I had my 5th grade students do these as an early finisher. I had them use two primary colors so their eyes would mix the colors. They really enjoyed seeing that result. Then on their own, they started doing this with bubble letters, hearts, peace signs, etc... to see how they would turn out. Definitely fun and engaging for them! Thanks for sharing!
