THE PLAN
2 sessions; 40 minutes per session
1. SWBAT identify the characteristics of the American flag.
2. SWBAT create an interesting composition using the words from American songs and poems.
3. SWBAT paint with tempera paint.
1. Print-outs of various American songs/poems
2. Glue sticks
3. Scissors
4. White tagboard
5. Tempera paint (white, red, and blue)
6. Paint brushes
Day 1: Look quickly at the evolution of the American flag, and talk about what the stars, stripes and colors mean. Read various stanzas of the poems/songs and ask students to name them. Explain that they will be cutting them apart and gluing them in an intersting fashion on the tagboard. Tell them to arrange the words so that they overlap, are crooked, etc.
Day 2: Review the parts of the flag. Paint a blue square in the upper left corner. Paint 7 red stripes. Use a brush (or your pointer finger) to dot in the stars on the blue square.
If you want to make this a little more in depth of a project and incorporate technology, it might be cool to take the kids to the computer lab to alter the fonts for the songs/poems. I simply printed out the songs in a packet, and changed the font for the pledge to be larger and thicker than the other two.
