Created on September 24, 2013 by akniskern

In this unit plan, Pre-K students are introduced to color by listening to the story Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh. Each class period, they use sponge brushes to paint a mouse a different primary or secondary color to create a Mouse Paint Color Book.

Day 1:
1. Read Mouse Paint and ask about what happened when the mice danced in a certain color (red and yellow, blue and red, etc).
2.Demonstrate how to use the brushes (I tell them to pretend they are mouse feet and to have them "dance" in their paint)
3. At their seats, students write their name on their paper (with assistance)
4. Pass out red paint and brushes for each table.
5. Students fill their mouse with red paint.
6. Let dry.

Day 2: Red and Yellow = Orange
1. Repeat day 1 with red and yellow paint.
-Discuss what happens when the two colors mix.

Day 3: Blue, Yellow & Green
1. Repeat the above with blue paint.
-Set aside.
2. Paint another mouse just with yellow paint.
-Set aside.
3. Add yellow to the blue to make green.
-Discuss what happened.

Day 4: Blue and Red = Purple
1. Repeat with blue and red paint.
-Discuss what happened.

Day 5:
1. Hand back one mouse they painted (it could be any color)
2. In a basket at their table, students will be sorting different colored objects to glue on their mouse (if you have a red mouse out, put a good mixture of all colored objects so they have to pick out the red to glue on their mouse.)
3. Students sort objects and glue the correct color to their mouse.
4. If time allows, try another colored mouse.

Day 6:
1. Sort more colors and finish the rest of the mice.

Day 7:
1. Same as day 6.

Students will be assessed based on their color sorting and the informal discussions on color mixing.

2. Mouse Page Template
-I drew the mouse based on an image I found online. Image is from kidzclub.com (If you need it, I can e-mail it to you.)
3. Cover Sheet (attached)

My Pre-k students love this lesson. After all the pages are completed, I use the school's book binder and bind their books for them.
