Introducing Common Core

Would love to hear how everyone is adapting to Common Core standards and how you are supporting the project based aspect of this new initiative in your art classrooms.

    Wow! ArtfulArtsyAmy, that is a great idea! Our workdays don't start for another week and we will have an all day inservice then to learn more. From what I've seen so far, our curriculum is still pretty free form which I am happy about. I hear it is a big change for Social Studies as they will be teaching cronologically instead of geographically. I think this is very good for us as it will make it easy to crosscurricularly align our lessons. I have been introducing lessons using the Elements and Principles as my pacing but could see switching to an Art History chronology especially in the advanced classes.

    I was able to use all of your words as a bulletin board at the end of the last school year to aid children with their vocabulary. The listing came a when students were in the process of taking formative assessments and then when preparing for their summative assessments. I like how the words had the cross over to other subjects because many times my middle school students seem to think that a word can only have one definition. HOTS goes into play when they truly begin to understand how one word can be applied in many different settings. Thanks ArtfulArtsyAmy !

    This year my district has also been diving into common core. One of the first things that stood out to me was the emphasis on text-based questions in reading and language arts, and how that relates to Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) in art. For those not yet familiar with VTS, it is an art criticism technique that consists of 3 basic questions: What is happening in this picture?, What do you see that makes you say that?, and What else can we find? That second question, What do you see that makes you say that?, directly relates to the common core shift towards asking students questions that require them to not only provide an answer to the question, but also to cite evidence from the text that supports their answer. The difference is that in art, it might not be text, but it could be a painting.

    I just bought a book titled STEAM point - A guide to Integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics through the Common Core by Susan M .Riley. It looks like it is a great resource on how to integrate these subjects together with some sample lessons and assessment ideas. Here is the link to more information on the book. Good Luck!
