Have you taken advantage of x-acto's warranty at all? We have only used x-acto brand, and when they go bad we exchange them for new ones!

I second that. I also bought the extended warranty from staples and they replaced the sharpener when the exacto warranty expired. I love my powerhouse.

I had great luck this year with Staples heavy duty electric sharpener:

This sharpener is $54 dollars and works much better than every other sharpener I've ever used---I previously tried 4 other supposedly heavy duty models and they all burned out after a couple of months at most. This one lasted all year without a problem despite heavy day in and out use!

We have this one and it is awesome!!! I'm in a K-8 building and pretty much see everyone and this sharpener is pretty cool. It makes almost no noise. It is really fast and lights up and stops when it is done. One of my favorite items we got this year. It takes a lot of abuse. Sometimes after we take the tray out it takes a second or two to work again but that is my only compliant. We also bought Stanley Bostitch QuietSharp Glow Pencil Sharpener
Also bought only black pencils instead of yellow ones because it was easier to see which ones were the art room pencils
