How do you start the first week of elementary off with your students?

    I quickly go over rules/expectations in the art room and teach a few procedures (lining up, clean up, etc.) and then I do a short art activity. The next class we review the rules and procedures (and learn a new one if we need to) and begin our first project. I don't get to see my students very much, so I don't waste a whole lot of time before I jump in to their first project! I just be sure to keep reviewing the rules/procedures for the first few weeks.

    I also teach them where everything they are allowed to use is located. And of course how to care for supplies. Pet peeve: washed brushed put bristles down. GRR. Now all my kids know how to wash a brush, and put it away with type and size. Yes!

    Of course going over art room rules and expectations comes first.
    Then with students in grades 2,3,4 and 5 - I have them make an oak-tag folder to hold their work. A simple fold over and glue 3 sides on the edges.
    I have them decorate their folder with the Elements or Principles of Art. (according to prior knowledge and age level)
    Call out;
    6 types of LINE
    3 PRIMARY COLORS
    Geometric shapes
    Free Form shapes etc etc
