Students will create a Mondrian style piece of artwork while exploring horizontal and vertical lines, reviewing the primary colors, and practicing gluing skills!

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 45 minutes per session
1. SWBAT identify works of art by Piet Mondrian
2. SWBAT define and use horizontal and vertical lines in their artwork.
3. SWBAT identify the primary colors and use them to add color to their work
4. SWBAT demonstrate the proper use of glue
1. Black strips of paper (I cut mine to be 9x1/2”)
2. 12x18 or 12x12 white paper
3. Glue
4. Red, yellow, and blue crayons
5. Examples of Piet Mondrian’s work
1. Show works by Piet Mondrian
a. What do students notice?
b. What kinds of lines are used?
c. What colors are used?
d. Do they like it, why or why not?
2. Explain vocabulary horizontal and vertical
3. Demonstrate gluing black strips of paper to create composition
4. Students work on gluing
5. Once dry, add color using only the primary colors.
a. Revisit Mondrian-
i. did he leave some spaces white?

iii. Will you?
Proficient:
• All lines are horizontal or vertical
• Coloring is neat and fills spaces
