Discuss art elements that will be used in this art. Especially go over contrast and why it is important to the overall design. Talk about torn paper collage and demo the procedures. Students will then...
1. Choose an animal design to create.
2. Begin collecting magazine pages to create animal while finding contrasting pages for background and details.
3. Research the animal and create an essay to accompany the art.
4. Design the collage layout.
5. Assemble torn paper into design.
6. Use acrylic paint to touch up and add details to the torn paper.
7. Display design along with essay.

Each student will turn in their essay to be graded separate from the collage.
Neatness, contrast and a full design are all the requirements.
The student will be able to answer 5 short answer questions about their animal and creating a collage.

Romare Bearden is an artist you can discuss and show the collages he created.
We also use Eric Carle by looking at his animal designs.
