Frederick the Mouse

Students create this simple collage based on the Frederick books. Students incorporate painting, cutting, and gluing all in one project.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 40 minutes per session

1. SWBAT demonstrate how to paint with tempera paint.
2. SWBAT cut safely with scissors.
3. SWBAT demonstrate how to glue correctly.
4. SWBAT identify what the illustrator does for a book.

1. White tag board
2. Black and white tempera
3. Paint brushes

Day 1: Read book and discuss Leo Lionni is the writer and illustrator of his books. Watch video of Lionni making his mouse. On tag board, demonstrate how to correctly paint with tempera paint. Have students swirl the black and white paint together on the tag board to create the affect of rocks.

Day 2: Turn over tag board and draw a variety of sizes of circles and shapes for rocks. Cut these out. Glue onto new white tag board. Give each student the Frederick handout. They should cut out Frederick, put him together and glue him on their rocks.
