Spring Butterfly Collage

Students use multiple painting techniques to create this bright spring collage. This lesson incorporates butterflies and can be used to incorporate Eric Carle as well.

THE PLAN
3 sessions; 40 minutes per session

1. SWBAT identify books and art by Eric Carle.
2. SWBAT explain how to create a collage.
3. SWBAT identify the parts of a butterfly.

1. Manila tag board
2. Large white tag board
3. Crayons
4. Watercolor paint
5. Butterfly patterns
6. Pencils
7. Scissors
8. Fluorescent tempera paint
9. Paint brushes and water buckets
10. Glue

Day 1: Read book by Eric Carle. Show students videos of how he created his illustrations for his books. Give out manila tag board and butterfly patterns. Trace there butterflies and look at the different parts (body, wings, antennae). Discuss symmetry. Students draw design on butterflies with crayon and then choose one color of watercolor paint to paint over the top.

Day 2: On large white tag board, create the sky. Sponge paint with blue and white tempera. On half sheet of manila tag board, streak green and yellow paint. This will become the grass.

Day 3: Cut grass and glue onto sky. Cut out butterflies and glue onto sky.
