1. Depending on when you are doing this lesson, you will either be introducing or reviewing the concept of monochromatic, tints and shades. Spend some time discussing with students.

2. Open up iPad app, choose a horizontal page. Pinch the page down slightly so that all of the edges can be seen.

3. Choose a solid brush and one color.
-Encourage students to be creative with the color choice

4. Review tint and have student adjust the color to the lightest value of the color they can get. Paint the sky with this color.

5. Discuss layers with students as you have them open a new layer. Show how the layers can be hidden, moved or adjusted.

6. In the new layer, select a value of the same color a little darker than the sky and paint the farthest section of land.

7 open a new layer and select a value of the color darker than the last. Paint another section of land.

8. Continue this process with each layer getting darker as it gets closer.

9. Have students save painting to camera roll and share with you using email, DropBox, Artsonia, or other methods.

10. Have students create another monochromatic landscape on their own
-Encourage them to add some creativity to this one.
-They could chose different kids of brushes for different land sections
-They could add bushes, trees, or other items to the landscape

Students will fill out an artist statement answering the following questions:
What does monochromatic mean? Explain the difference between a tint and a shade. What was your favorite and least favorite part of this project.

I found my upper elementary students did a great job with these. It really helped them understand tints and shades and creating the atmospheric perspective in a landscape.
I follow this up with a tempera painting where students can use the concepts in a traditional artwork.
