Using the iPad app Faces iMake, students can create digital face collages inspired by the works of Giuseppe Arcimboldo. This is a great project for students working on their own or in pairs. It can be used alone or as an introduction before doing a traditional collage.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 45 minutes per session
1. SWBAT define collage.
2. SWBAT be introduced to artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
3. SWBAT explore shape.
4. SWBAT define portrait.
5. SWBAT reinvent new uses for objects.
1. Information and images for Giuseppe Arcimboldo' artwork
2. iPads
3. iPad app Faces iMake
1. Introduce students to the artwork of Arcimboldo
-show images of his collage both from far away and close up
-have students discuss what they see and what they think of his works
2. Review portraits with students.
3. Demonstrate how to use the app Faces iMake
-For best results mirror the iPad using Apple TV or AirServer app. Showing under a document camera works as well
-show students how to select, move, resize, duplicate, and delete items
4. Depending on the number of iPads you have in your classroom, have students work on their own or group students together.
-This is a great partner or small group project
5. Create a portrait using Faces iMake
-Choose a background color
-Choose a face shape
-Use all the items wished to create a finished portrait
6. Save image to camera roll and share with teacher using email, DropBox, Artsonia, or other sharing methods
7. An extension of this is to have students do a collage with magazines on paper inspired by the work they did on the iPad.
Students will be filling in an artist statement sheet that contains the following questions:
A portrait is a picture of a _________?
How is a collage different from a painting? What was your favorite and least favorite parts of this project?
