THE PLAN
5 sessions; 45 minutes per session
1. SWBAT create a design focusing on line and shape.
2. SWBAT apply the gel glue to the design using good craftsmanship.
3. SWBAT apply fabric dye or paint to the open areas of the design and the background.
4.SWBAT remove the glue and rinse fabric till it is free of residue.
5.SWBAT add detail to the batik with embroidery stitches.
6.SWBAT sew a backing to the batik by hand and then stuff and sew into a pillow.
1. Muslin
2. Pencil
3. Elmer's Gel Glue
4. Fabric paint or fabric dye in multiple colors
5. Sink
6. Iron
7. Plastic scraper ( or something similar used to remove glue from fabric)
8. Fabric for pillow backing
9. Embroidery floss and needles
10. Pillow stuffing
1. Design motif
2. Draw motif on muslin lightly with a pencil.
3. Trace pencil line using gel glue.
4. Once glue is dry, fill areas with fabric dye or paint.
5. Once color is dry, soak fabric in warm water until the glue is soft.
6. Use plastic firm plastic scraper to remove gel glue.
7. Iron the fabric.
8. Use embroidery floss to add details to the batik.
9. Students were taught the following stitches -
running, back, cross, tapestry, and whip
10. Place right side of finished batik to right side of backing fabric. Stitch together using small, even stitches. Leave one side partially open.
11. Turn fabric right side out, stuff and hand sew the opening shut.
