Every artist needs a place to store their pens and pencils. So why not make one. Using toilet or paper towel rolls students will be able to create pencil holders out of them.

THE PLAN
1 session; 50 minutes per session
1. SWBAT create a pencil holder using toilet paper rolls.
2. SWBAT decorate it using patterns.
1. Toilet paper roll (or paper tower roll cut down to size)
1. Measure and cut down your sheet of paper. (Give yourself some overhang near the edge. This will give yourself some playing room to adjust the paper when you start gluing. A width of 5 or 6 inches is good enough.)
2. Draw your pattern on your sheet of paper with your markers.
3. Glue the back of your paper and roll it tightly around the toilet paper roll. (If you plan on using tape instead of glue, roll tightly and tape shut.)
4. Once the glue is dry, cut slits into the paper that overhangs and fold them inside the roll. Glue or tape them down.
5. Trace the bottom of your roll on the cardboard and cut it out. (This will be the bottom of your pencil holder.)
6. Glue the cardboard to your roll and you are finished.
Gluing magnets onto the pencil holders makes it great to place on refrigerators or the sides of desks.
This is great to have your students work on with a sub.

Great sub lesson indeed! I wonder if a group could make several and experiment with binding methods to create a sculpture?
