Early [PK-K] Lesson Plan

"The Dot" - young elementary

Created on August 25, 2014 by Munequita

Younger students love reading the book "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. After we read together, we brainstorm ideas of many things made with circles or dots. Students have options of different sizes of circles to trace and are encouraged to use their creativity and not make what their neighbor is making. We finish the artwork with special paint markers (bingo dotters work well, too!).

1. Read and discuss The Dot by Peter Reynolds. What is the lesson that the little girl learns? (don’t give up, art doesn’t have to be perfect, practice practice practice, help others, etc.)

2. Brainstorm as a class different things made of circles, places we see circles, etc.

3. Distribute pencils and papers and encourage students to show creativity, which means using your imagination and not copying off of the person sitting next to you. Turn your circle(s) into something creative!

4. Color with crayons. In the negative space we will use paint markers to make even more circles!

Did student... -show creativity in their circle drawing? -correctly use paint markers in the negative space?
