Need these materials? Visit Blick!

1. Have students draw their animal in pencil on the construction paper. They should also incorporate the animal's habitat in the background.

2. Outline everything in white oil pastel.

3. Demonstrate how to use oil pastels to create value, blending, and texture.

4. Students should color and shade the background first and work their way to the foreground.

See attached rubric.

The 5th grade students in my district do a research project on a jungle animal at the end of the school year. I do this project in conjunction with that project. Everyone must do a drawing of their animal. This could be done for any animal research project.

Color theory knowledge will show by them using complementary colors to create shadows and darker values...add black or white to create tings and shades, using analogous colors to create texture and depth in their objects, etc.
