3 sessions; 60 minutes per session

The students will have the ability to describe and illustrate the Principles of Design using a Trite or Cliche' symbol.

1. Drawing tools
-Pencils
-Color Pencils
-Markers
-Anything that makes a mark

2.Worksheet that has the Principles that you and your department have agreed upon.

3. Document camera, white board, or anything that you can draw examples on.

1. Use the worksheet provided, or create one that works best for you. Be sure to leave areas for definitions and drawing space.

2. Review the Elements of Art. I always describe them as "The building blocks of any and all works of art".

3. Next, you will introduce the Principles as how the Elements are organized.

4. Define trite & cliche' for the class.

5. Ask the students to come up with examples of trite or cliche' symbols. Write/draw them on the board.

6. The students will then choose one trite symbol that they will incorporate into their artwork.

7. Teach each Principle at a time. Make sure that you effectively define and illustrate each using a trite symbol. (plan your design ahead of time)

8. Instruct your students to define and illustrate the Principle using the previously chosen symbol on the provided worksheet. They may use any dry media (pencil, color pencils, marker, etc)

-The effectiveness is enhanced if A.) The illustration is not directly copied.
B.) The students are instructed to illustrate as if the result would be a "polished" work of art.
C.) Plan your illustrations in advance.

9. Give your students plenty of time to illustrate. Be sure to walk around to check for understanding.

10. I usually get through 2 or 3 Principle per class period. Make sure to review the instructions/material from previous day.

-Correct Illustration
-Correct Definition
-Quality or Craftsmanship of work

*Nearly every art department that I have worked with or learned from have conflicting Principles of Design. These conflicting ideas can be challenging when teaching your students. Take the time to discuss which Principles will be used by your department. That will help unify your team/department.*
