THE PLAN
6 sessions; 50 minutes per session
SWBAT draw objects in proportion.
SWBAT create value within a drawing.
1. 18x 12 white paper (I used multi-media paper)
2. charcoal (the students seem to like the pencils better than the sticks)
3. kneaded erasers
4. blending stumps
5. variety of glass objects
1. Set-up a glass still-life. I tried to putt different sized objects next to each other. I wanted students to be able to focus on the glass and not the background.
2. Demonstrate sketching out the still-life with pencil. I told students to zoom-in like a camera, so there wouldn't be a lot of negative space.
3.Demonstrate using charcoal to create value. I encouraged students to use a range of values besides just black and white.
4. Show students how to blend the charcoal to get a lighter value.
5. Show students how to pull-out charcoal with a kneaded eraser.
6.Have students pick a spot around the still-life and start drawing. (I grave my students drawing boards, so they could move close the still-life and draw.)
Students were graded based on the following criteria:
1.Accurate proportions
2.Range of value to show dimension
3.Craftsmanship
4.Time and Effort
This lesson really seems to help students sharpen their drawing skills and see value in their drawing!
