High school Art I students view and discuss contemporary and historical coat of arms designs and focus on how imagery, symbols, and colors are interpreted to have deeper meaning

THE PLAN
1. SWBAT articulate how culture influences the interpretation of symbols, colors, and imagery
2. SWBAT analyze, describe, and interpret historical and contemporary coat of arms designs
3. SWBAT choose from multiple available media to complete their own coat of arms design
1. 9x12" paper
2. Colored Pencils
3. Markers
4. Black Sharpies
5. Light Box (or windows)
6. Sketch template
7. Magazines
8. Glue Sticks
9. X-Acto Knives
10. Scissors
11. Computer
12. Printer or Photocopier (some students prefer to hand color their found images)
1. Project or pass out color copies of historical and contemporary coats of arms. Lead students through a discussion of how the different images and symbols can be interpreted to have meaning deeper than their surface value
- I use the State of Maine Flag, our school's coat of arms, and the British coat of arms
- This can also be a group discussion, assign one coat of arms to each group, have them discuss and note their observations, and then share their interpretations with the class
2. Students will develop a minimum of two sketches of a coat of arms that represents them as individuals
3. Students will choose from multiple drawing media and incorporate collage elements into their final coat of arms artwork
I use a common rubric for all of my summative assessments. It is attached to at least one of my other lesson plans.
This can also be accomplished digitally with excellent results!
