Day 1: Show a video about Dia De Los Muertos (There are a bunch on Discovery Streaming or You Tube.) Have kids take notes.

Day 2: Kids will design their own masks. Give each child a piece of white paper to plan their designs.

DAY 3,4 &5: Demo how to apply strips of paper to mask form and create masks. Have kids make masks. Kids should have a minimum of 5 layers.

Day 6: Kids will take paper mache masks of forms and create a base later of white.

Day 7: Kids will use paints and notions to decorate masks.

Day 8: Have kids write a statement or essay about their masks.

See attached Rubric

To keep track of who's mask is who's I have the kids write their names on a piece of masking tape which I place inside the mask form. Then when they are done with the form they peel off the tape and place it on the inside of their mask.

I use these masks to make an alter in our room.
