Ugly Mug

The students will create a Slab-Built mugs with and Asymmetrical face.

THE PLAN
6 sessions; 60 minutes per session

The Student Will Have the Ability to create a Slab-Built mug with and Asymmetrical Face

The Student will have the ability to properly glaze a ceramic project.

Clay
Clay modeling tools
Rolling pins
Glaze
PVC tube

1. Demonstrate how to create a slab made mug.
A.) Roll out slab
B.) Use straight edge to cut slab into an even rectangle.
C.) Wrap Newspaper around PVC tube.
D.) Wrap slab around tube.
E.) Cut off the extra clay.
F.) Slip and Score
G.) Make a slab for the bottom
H.) Trip and attach bottom
I.) Make handle (I show several styles)

2. Assign the students to create well made mugs (collaboratively). I do this in groups so that the students have more opportunity to be successful. Move throughout the room to check for understanding.

3.Demonstrate how to create an asymmetrical face after each student has a well made mug form.
A.) Start with eyes
B.) Demo Nose (multiple styles)
C.) Lips
D.) The extras (horns, eyelashes, etc)

4.Spend the next two class periods building faces.

5. Allow to dry and fire

6. Demonstrate proper glazing procedures.
A.) Target of 3 coats
B.) Don't Glaze the bottom
C.) Read the label
D.) Shake or mix glazes
E.) Don't overload your brush

7. Allow the students to glaze. I usually allow 2 or maybe 3 periods to accomplish this.
