1. SWBAT tell about the importance of recycling newspaper and catalogs.
2. SWBAT tear paper with their hands to create a 2-D college.
3. SWBAT create a abstract design.
4. SWBAT study the artist Romere Bearden.
1. Scrap paper (catalogs from teacher work room or newspapers.
2. Elmer's glue
3. Square plastic sandwich trays with covers.
4. Small kitchen sponges.
5. 12"X18" Black Construction Paper
6. 1/4" strips of Multi-colored Construction Paper (saved scraps from previous art work made into 1/4' wide stripes done by teacher ahead of lesson).
1. Tear out sheets out of catalogs and old newspapers.
2. Make glue sponges using the sandwich plastic containers (place sponges in containers and pour glue on the damp sponge).
3. Take a handful of pre-cut construction strips (recycled from former art projects.) Tear some in different lengths.
4. Glue strips of construction paper onto 12"X18" black construction paper.
5. Tear strips from catalog sheets into various sizes and add to black construction paper. Do the same for the newspaper.
6. Build up several interesting layers of all recycling papers. All papers are torn (not cut with scissors).
Students will watch a video biography on the artist Romare Bearden.
7. Place strips onto glue sponges and arrange into an interesting abstract design.
Students will raise their hand when I read the following for assessment:
1. If you are a Novice... I'm Just starting to learn this - Raise your hand.
2. If you are a Practitioner... I can do this mostly on my own, but I still mess up - Raise your hand.
3. If you are an Apprentice...I'm starting to get it, and I need someone to coach me through. Raise your hand.
4. I'm an Expert...I understand it well enough that I could teach it to someone else. Raise your hand.
Students will vote for one of the four about one time to the level of learning they have accomplished on this art project.
