THE PLAN
3 sessions; 40 minutes per session
1. SWBAT discuss meaning, technique, feeling and personal opinion while viewing artworks.
2. SWBAT combine two or more creatures or objects to create a hybrid drawing.
3. SWBAT to make artistic choices to develop an original image.
1. Images from Nicolas Lampert (project or print out from his website)
2. Resource books such as animal Zoobooks, machines, insect books, etc. to look at while drawing.
3. Pencils, erasers, colored pencils, markers (any drawing materials of your choice)
1. Start by discussing the machine animal collages and the machine insect collages by Nicolas Lampert. Ask questions such as
* How do you think Nicolas made these pictures?
* How do they make you feel?
* Why do you think he combined animals or insects with machines?
* How would these pictures be different if he used color?
* Do you like these pictures, why or why not?
2. Students will create their own hybrid drawings by combining two or more creatures, animals, machine parts, objects or insects. Use books or magazine pictures for reference of the different parts the students want to combine.
3. Draw lightly with pencil and then add color or shading with pens, markers, colored pencils or crayons.
4. Students can write an artist statement when they are finished explaining their image. To tie in with Language Arts, students can write a story about their hybrid creature.
1. Did the student combine two or more objects, animals or insects?
2. Did the student create a unique and original image?
3. Are the combined parts unified? Do they "make sense" even though they are parts from different things?
3. Did the student show care and craftsmanship while completing the drawing?
Alternate process: Students can cut out magazine images and photocopies from books to create their hybrid pictures. After creating a cut and paste collage, they can draw the collage.
This would also be a good lesson to tie in with Surrealist artists such as Dali, Magritte, Sebastian Erikkson (an 18 year old), Sarolta Ban and Vladimir Kush.
