Kinder Color Wheel Cow

This lesson teaches kindergarten students the color wheel, primary colors, and secondary colors.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 45 minutes per session

1. SWBAT recognize and read a color wheel
2. SWBAT identify primary and secondary colors

1. 12x18 white drawing paper
2. Black acrylic paint
3. Paint brushes
4. Plate for paint
5. Oil pastels
6. Play dough in primary colors (red, yellow, blue)

Day One:
1. Introduce students to the color wheel. Explain the colors on the color wheel can be grouped into different families. Today, we will focus on the color group called PRIMARY colors.
2. Play OK Go's Three Primary Colors video on youtube. Ask students to listen for the three primary colors
3. Have students verbally list the primary colors (red, yellow, blue)
4. Explain why primary colors are so important - (you can use them to make new colors called secondary colors)
5. Explain objective: Painting your own color wheel and turning the color wheel into a cow
6. After handing out paper and painting supplies, give step-by-step directions on painting a color wheel cow
- Curved line for a head
- Oval for a nose
- Ears
- BIG circle for the belly. Divide belly into 6 sections for the color wheel (an X with a line through the middle)
- Add legs and a tail
- Paint eyes, nose, and add spots if necessary
- Paint zig zag line for grass

Day 2:
1. Review Color wheel and Primary colors
2. Explain when Primary colors mix, you get new colors called SECONDARY colors
3. Replay Ok Go's Three Primary Colors video from youtube and ask students to specifically look for the secondary colors and what primary colors make them
4. Hand out play dough in the 3 primary colors
- Demo breaking each color in half to have two balls of each color (6 total - 2 red, 2 yellow, 2 blue)
5. Instruct students to make the secondary color orange (mix red and yellow) Use the color wheel to show orange is in the middle of red and yellow.
- Repeat for Green (mix blue and yellow), and Purple (mix blue and red). Put play dough away when finished
6. Pass back previously painted cows and instruct students to find the primary colors in oil pastels
7. Demo coloring the primary colors on the color wheel
- Emphasize leaving a white triangle between each color
8. Instruct students to find the secondary colors in oil pastels
9. Demo coloring the secondary colors between the correct primary colors e.g., orange is in the middle of red and yellow; green is in the middle of blue and yellow; purple is in the middle of blue and red
10. Once the color wheel is complete, students may finish coloring their cow and background how they wish.

Students will be assessed on the accuracy of their color wheel. Students can also verbally state the primary and secondary colors.
