Students read the book Ruby in Her Own Time and discuss bird shapes. Students sculpt their own ceramic birds. Students will then write their own story about their birds.

THE PLAN
TLW associate ceramic with their created baby bird.
TLW identify glazed and unglazed portions of their finished work.
TLW listen to the story Ruby in Her Own Time by Jonathan Emmett.
TLW execute a drawing about their ceramic bird inspired by the story Ruby in Her Own Time.
TLW assemble (with teacher aid) his/her baby bird and nest.

1. Read book
2. Hand out precut slices of clay
3. Have students manipulate their clay with you
4. Make one large ball, one small ball and two “pinches”
5. Demonstrate how to score and slip
6. Help students attach their heads to bodies and wings to bodies
7. Write names on bottoms for students
8. Allow to dry out
9. Kiln fire
10. Hand out birds
11. Set out presorted choices of glaze color
12. Demonstrate how to glaze and how to apply three coats. Instruct students to leave heads w/o glaze

16. Hand out scratch paper, construction paper, glue and yarn
17. Demonstrate how to make a nest out of paper
18. Help students
19. While students watch hot glue their bird into their nest.
20. Hand out white paper
21. Students are to draw a picture of their bird “in action” And, write a story.
