THE PLAN
5 sessions; 50 minutes per session

1. SWBAT use value effectively
2. Students will practice drawing realistically.

1. 9"x12" paper or larger
2. #2 pencils and sharpener.
3. Eraser
4. Tissue (for smudging)

1. Teacher print out from Internet Image search "Black and White Pencil drawings of Still Life".
2. Teacher will print out Value Scale Practice worksheets (white, light grey, grey, dark grey, black) for each student.
3. Day 1- demonstrate how to create a value scale. One scale illustrates five value steps. The second scale shows a smooth gradation from light to dark. A third example is a line drawing of 5 forms- sphere, cube, cylinder, cone and rectangular cube. Students practice shading these forms.
4. Distribute paper and photocopies of still life drawings.
5. VISUALIZE the drawing on the paper.
6. BLOCK IN the geometric shapes similar to the objects.
7. CONTOUR draw around and refine the objects more realistically.
8. Using the side of the sharpened pencil, Shade all objects with light grey. Slowly, shade each object from light to dark, including stems, leaves, perceived edges and cast shadows.
9. Smudge values to soften and blend. Gently use eraser to bring out white highlights.
10. Use sharpened pencil point to redraw edges of objects and details, allowing some areas to utilize an IMPLIED line.

1. More than three objects are drawn.
2. Each object is drawn carefully with an accurate contour line.
3. Each object is shaded from light to dark, including white and black.
4. Values are softened, smoothed and lightened with smudging.

Students could also watch short YouTube Videos on "How to Draw a Black and White Still Life", with the sound off, which I played while they were drawing.
