THE PLAN
8 sessions; 60 minutes per session
Explore the history of mask making and the methods they were created.
Create a large scale, mixed media mask that exhibits visual expression and unity.
18" x 24" heavyweight paper
18" x 24" foamboard
Chalk pastels
Black permanent markers
Rubber cement
Xacto knife
Cutting mat
Variety of fibers (yarn, fabric, leather scraps, etc.)
Session 1: Discussing Masks
Class discussion on the history of masks, including their functions. Explore the variety of materials used over the course of time to create masks. Identify commonalities and differences in a variety of masks.
Session 2: Design Thinking
Create four thumbnail sketches that demonstrate a consideration of mask design. Include notes on color scheme, proportion, details, etc.
Session 3: Draw
Draw large scale mask design on heavyweight, mixed media paper. Trace masks with black permanent marker. Include a variety of line thickness.
Session 4: Adhere and Cut
Use rubber cement of adhere mask design to foamboard. Use an x-acto knife to cut the masks exterior edge. (Review safety guideline prior to x-acto knife use; monitor cutting closely.)
Session 5: Chalk Pastel
Use chalk pastels to add color to the mask. (Review media possibilities prior to pastel use.)
Session 6: Chalk Pastel and Fiber Preparation
Finish color (using chalk pastels) and use an x-acto knife to create small slits that will allow space for a variety of fibers to be added to the mask.
Session 7: Fiber Additions
Use a variety of fibers to customize and complete mask making. Coordinate choice of fiber(s) with mask color scheme.
Session 8: Mask Critique and Self-assessment
Peer critique of masks using TAG Review and self-assessment completion.

Students will complete a self-assessment of their mask by answering the following questions.
Which artist had the biggest influence on your creative work? Explain.
List three things you believe you did well as an artist. Be descriptive.
