This celebration has evolved over the years. It began as an art show featuring the work of my year long 8th grade artists. I asked others to get involved. Each year it changes as to what other areas are involved and to what extent. Schedules, testing and personal choice are all involved in their decision.
I coordinate the event with the Spring book sale. The library is open that night and makes quite a bundle! If possible, we will try to integrate the book fair theme with the art show.
It is a beautiful experience when visitors arrive to find the lobby full of art and the stair landing resonating with a 4 piece string ensemble. Music is scheduled on a rotating basis. The theater dept. presents on the stage, the technology dept. demonstrates some STEM creations. Foreign language, science and math may have projects on display, I generally have my students work collaboratively to create a few paintings that are auctioned off with a silent auction to benefit a local charity. Art with a Heart!
An added benefit has been the media specialist provides me with a subscription for my entire class to Scholastic Arts Magazine with profits from the book fair!
It is a lot of work, but it is so rewarding for the students to share and demonstrate their time and talents with each other and the community!
