Students will create a sculpture out of construction paper layered on top of each other. The first image was taken with the flash on. The second image was taken with the flash off to better show how deep the center is.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 40 minutes per session
1. SWBAT create a layered paper sculpture.
1. Construction paper (multiple colors)
2. Glue
3. Scissors
4. Craft sticks
5. Foam board or posterboard (cut down to the same size as construction paper)
1. Look at all the colors of construction paper available. Collect 5 or more sheets in different colors. Then arrange them in the order you want them to go. There are a lot of ways to go about this. Monochromatic, rainbows or choosing with your eyes closed are just a few options.
2. Fold the first sheet of paper in half. Starting at the fold line, cut a geometric or abstract shape as large as you can, coming close to the edge of the paper all in one cut. If you are unsure of what shape to cut, draw it out on the folded paper first.
3. Fold the next sheet of paper and place it inside the previous one, making sure the folds line up. Attach paper clips to hold the sheets together.
4. Starting at the fold, cut the paper slightly away from the edge, following the outline of the first shape. This will make the second shape smaller than the first one.
5. Now fold a third sheet of paper and repeat steps 3 and 4. Continue doing this until you have used up all the sheets of paper you selected or until you can no longer cut any shapes. Set aside all the center cut pieces.
6. Cut your posterboard or foam board down to the same size as your construction paper if it's not. This will act as a background and a steady base for when we start gluing our sheets together.
7. Collect all of your folded sheets, and starting with the sheet with the smallest hole, glue it to your base. Next glue craft sticks along the edges of your paper, and then glue the next sheet down to the craft sticks and so on. The craft sticks will give your piece added dimension. Set aside for the glue to dry. If done correctly the shapes will start small and get larger.
*****BONUS*****
Using the leftover center pieces stack them on top of each other from largest to smallest to create another paper sculpture.
