5th Grade - Fall Leaves

Includes: Actual Lesson Plan, Photographs, PowerPoint. Students will learn about observational drawing and create a work of art from looking at real leaves. Students will add color to their drawing using watercolor paint in warm and cool colors. An optional sea salt resist can be added to the background.

THE PLAN
1. Students will learn about observational drawing and create a work of art from looking at real leaves.
2. Students will add color to their drawing using watercolor paint in warm and cool colors.
3. An optional sea salt resist can be added to the background.

Teacher: Example, PowerPoint Presentation, Leaves
Student: 4.5x6 white drawing paper, pencil, eraser, glue, 6.5x8 black construction paper, black Sharpie, watercolor paint, water dish, paper towels, paint brushes, sea salt

Day 1
1. PowerPoint presentation of project
2. Observational Drawing of Leaves
a. 4.5x6 white drawing paper
b. Include at least 3 leaves, they can be the same or different
c. “Draw what you see, not what you think”
d. “Draw light till you get it right”
3. Outline Drawing with Black Sharpie
a. Carefully go over your drawing using a Black Sharpie.
b. Once finished, go over your drawing with an eraser.
Day 2
4. Review – What are warm and cool colors?
a. Have color wheel and divide in half to visually show the division.
5. Paint using Watercolors
a. Review Watercolor painting expectations. Gently ‘pet’ the paint, we are not digging for gold. Rinse your brush between colors. Mix colors on your paper.
b. Choose to paint the leaves in warm or cool colors then paint the background the opposite.
c. Wet-on-wet technique for the background, add sea salt to the background if wanted.
Day 3
6. Frame artwork on 6.5x8 black construction paper
a. Name & Teacher Code on the back in white pencil

Frame, photograph and upload to ArtSonia. Hang up in the hallway for all to admire.
