Students had to create an animated GIF based on their favorite animated character in Photoshop. Students learned the basic tools in Photoshop and color basics.

THE PLAN
5 sessions; 45 minutes per session
1. SWBAT know the basic tools in Photoshop CC.
2. SWBAT to create a simple animated GIF in Photoshop CC.
3. SWBAT to identify a color scheme that will work with their animated GIF.
Session 1
1. Students were shown examples of previous students animated GIF characters. (10 min)
- discussion on color schemes
- primary, secondary, tertiary, complementary
- Teacher explained resolution requirements and aspect ratio of 16:9
2. Students start to research favorite animated characters. (35 min)
Next session
1. Teacher introduces the brush tool, selection tools, eraser tool, and layers panel. (15 min)
2. Students implement the tools to start tracing their character on a layer. (30 min)
Session 2
1. Teacher reviews. Quizizz on Photoshop. (15 min)
2. Rest of the class time is work session.
Session 3
1. Teacher reviews. Quizizz on Photoshop. (15 min)
2. Rest of the class time is work session.
Session 4
1. Teacher gives instructions on how to export as an animated GIF and use the timeline in Photoshop CC. (15 min)
2. Student use that time to work and implement what they have learned.
Session 5
1. Review (10 min)
2. Students work and finish. Submit their GIF and add to their student website portfolio.
Session 6
Group Critique of student work.
Color scheme is evident. 10-0
Craftsmanship. I base their animations on did they meet the number of frames.10-0
Production Skills. Proper file format and size. 10-0.
Software understanding 10-0
I total the points and use the gradebook system to average out the %.
You need to make sure students check the hamburger
stack in the timeline.
Sometimes it is great to have the new layer visible on each frame sometimes not.
Remember which layer and frame they are on.
I have not done with with Photopea, but I've heard that it is possible to use for animated GIF. It is a free browser based program. As long as you have internet access on the computer you can use it.
You can use this for CTAE Animation or Graphic Design Pathway.
