This was created for elementary art enrichment during distance learning- 4 art projects inspired by zoos and aquariums that have options for virtual field trips from live streaming, keeper talks, etc.
Jellyfish: Cereal bag or waxed paper, about 6 inches of plastic wrap, iron, newspaper or paper towel, construction paper, bottled glue
Optional: paint, bubble wrap, tissue paper, mod podge, yarn
Hippo: pencil and paper
Panda: Cardboard/cereal box/cardstock for the base, pencil, magazines, scissors, glue
Optional: Mod podge
Porcupine
Draw a hill shape to give yourself a guide
Put the fork in paint, curved side down and start to make marks that point out following the shape of the hill
Paint a nose, eye, and legs for the porcupine
Paint a background if you want!
Jellyfish
Prepare your background by stamping bubble wrap in paint on construction paper if you don’t want it to be plain. You can also draw lines or patterns.
Get a grownup to help you iron the cereal bag or waxed paper between newspaper or paper towel
Cut out a half circle from the ironed paper
Crinkle the piece of plastic wrap and use the iron to melt it onto the middle of the straight edge of the half circle
If you want your jellyfish to have color you can paint or mod podge/glue tissue paper to the back of your jellyfish
If you have yarn or string, you can use it to make more tentacles
Glue tentacles and jellyfish to your background
Panda
Sketch the shape of your animal on the base to give yourself a map. Draw shapes where colors change.
Cut or tear out sections of color and pattern from magazines. Make sure you get all the colors you need. Text is ok.
Begin to cut or tear papers to fit into the shapes where you need that color and glue in place. *If you know what color you want the background to be, it will save you time to glue that down first.
If you have mod podge you can brush that over the top when you are done to seal everything in place.
I demonstrated all 4 projects and then gave a link to the handout that had information about the steps and the specific zoos and aquariums thy inspired the projects during a Facebook live session for elementary art enrichment.
You could just pick one of these projects and teach the lesson in the classroom, which would probably take a class or two for each.
