Rainbow Name Tags

A great lesson to learn student names, integrate literature, and learn about the rainbow!

THE PLAN
SWBAT identify rainbow order & colors (ROYGBIV)
SWBAT apply their knowledge of lines and design a unique repeating pattern that is visually interesting.

1.Tagboard (poster paper or thick paper can work)
2.Pencils
3.Erasers
4.Sharpie OR black marker
5.Examples of Name Tags
6.Practice Name Slips
7.Rainbow Visuals
Books Optional:
Rainbow Goblins by Ul de Rico
Rainbow of My Own by Don Freeman
8. Crayons
9. Markers

Introduce Rainbow Unit.
1. Pre-test - Draw a rainbow: what colors? Is there an order? - collect
2. Younger students read aloud: “A Rainbow of My Own” by Don Freeman
3. Mnemonic phrase: Remember the colors and correct order of rainbow ROYGBIV
4. Step 1 Sketch - students will begin their practice name tag - you can have names pre-printed on paper and ready to go
5. Explain contour lines - Demo using a pencil.
– Talk about curving lines, the lines shouldn’t be straight or have edges.
- For sketch, you can use crayons to color in ROYGBIV
6. Final Nametag
Handout 4x9 tag board (whatever size you chose)
7. Older students can neatly print names in pencil and go over with Sharpie
- Younger students you may write names in sharpie for them
8. Markers: Handout marker packets (take out any colors that are not part of the rainbow)
Begin coloring each section in ROYGBIV order
9. Wrap-up lesson by reading Rainbow Goblins by Ul de Rico

-Specialty Markers (Foohy Glitter Markers or Crayola Changeables)

-Optional: ROYGBIV Song by Greg Percy- Students will learn and sing the ROYGBIV song

Simplify for younger students or modify to make more challenging for older students.

Turn into wearable art by adding yarn for a necklace.
