Choose Your Own Adventure: Space

This resource introduces students to ways that artists represent and use space including 1 and 2 point perspective, space in landscapes, and negative space.

THE PLAN
6 sessions; 45 minutes per session

1. SWBAT correctly draw forms in 1 and 2 point perspective.
2. SWBAT draw a landscape with foreground, middle ground, and background to show space.
3. SWBAT understand positive and negative space and emphasize negative space in a work of art.
4. SWBAT choose their own adventure to plan and create a work of art that utilizes or represents space.

1. Rulers
2. Pencils
3. Erasers
4. Ultra fine point sharpies
5. Drawing paper
6. Choice of available drawing supplies

Day 1
1. Introduction
-Explain that we will be exploring different ways that artists use and show space in their artwork.
-Linear perspective is one way that artists show space.
2. Demonstrate 1 point perspective and have students complete practice sheets
3. Demonstrate 2 point perspective and have students follow along to complete practice sheet.

Day 2
4. Landscape
-Look at a landscape and point out that foreground, middle ground, and background are present which helps show space like you can see into the distance.
-notice how things that are further away are smaller and higher up in the picture.
-have students draw a simple landscape with foreground, middle ground, and background.
5. Negative space
-explain positive and negative space.
-students draw an interesting silhouette or shape in the middle of their papers and fill in the area around it with interesting patterns using a sharpie.

Day 3
6. Explain options for students to choose their own adventure and plan an artwork that uses or shows space.
-students check their plan with the teacher for approval before starting to work.
