5 sessions; 45 minutes per session

1.The students will view and discuss the award winning short, Hey Dear!
2. The students will learn to use a green screen for photography.
3. The students will use the selection tools to remove the background from their photo and to constrain their use of tools.
4. The students will use shape tools to build a snow globe in Photoshop.
5. The students will use layers and masks to create a background setting for their snow globe.
6. The students will use a layer mask to put themselves in a snow globe.
7. The students will use gradients to create highlights and shadows in their work.

Small pieces of paper and pencils

Day 1
Give the students small pieces of paper and ask them to draw a snow globe to see what they picture.
Show the Hey Dear! Video and discuss what it would be like to live in a snow globe.
Look at examples of different styles of snowglobes, look for commonalities and differences.
Students brainstorm what they would like their snow globes to look like.
Teacher starts to demonstrate the steps to build a snow globe using shapes, selection tools, and masks.
Remind students to be prepared for green screen photos the following day.
Day 2
Take students’ photos in front of the green screen and share photos with them.
Continue with video playlist
Day 3
Students continue to work on their background.
Demonstrate using brushes to make falling snow.
Demonstrate using gradients and selection tools to make highlights and shadows
Days 4 & 5
Finish up snow globes and turn in!
