Abstract Surrealism Drawings

Created on August 19, 2021 by Catriplett1

Your students will have fun and be challenged with this abstract project. Students will have to create a unique abstract surrealism drawing using a limited number of items found on a list, how the go about it is limited only to their imaginations.

1. Teachers should introduce students to the world of abstract surrealism.

2. Give each student the "Objects" handout and explain that they can chose which side they would like to use they will not use both.

---Side One (Objects). Student will need to pick 5-7 objects from the list (preferably items that do NOT go together). They will then choose one shape/form and one texture/pattern from the list. They may add only one object that is not on any of the lists (they might wait to see what they need).

or

---Side 2 (Lists - Group 1-7) Students will choose which list interests them the most. They must use 5 -7 objects from their chosen list only. They also need to choose 1 shape/form, 1 pattern or texture, and one added object.

3. Once students have chosen which side and objects they want and can start sketching out how those objects work together to create and interesting, surrealism drawing. They can be literal and create a scene, they can create a still life setup, or they can create an invention/Rube Goldberg type invention. (45 minutes x 2-3).

4. Once students have found the design they like, they will lightly sketch their idea on to a 12 x18 sheet of paper with a pencil. (15 - 45 minutes).

5. Using a variety of marker sizes, students will trace over and erase their pencil lines. They will add values and shade by using the hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling methods to create their final product. (45 minutes x 5-7)

I like to make this challenging so I really try to keep to the rules of:

5-7 objects from either lists
1 pattern
1 shape/form
only one added object.
