As part of learning to draw and developing contour drawing skills, students draw a small detailed contour drawing of their backpack. Students then 'scale up' that initial drawing to a much larger sheet of paper.
After completing the drawing, the teacher reads an exerpth from 'Thing Things They Carried' by Tim O'Brien
Students then fill the background/negative space of their larger drawing with the things they carry on a daily basis.

Did students create a detailed contour drawing of their backpack?
Did students fill in the negative space of their drawing with words and/or images of the 'things they carry'?
